eHealth Nurses Network Wiki Space Explained

This exciting new facility has been launched with the September 2006 web site update. It is for anyone who has completed and sent us a Contact Form. Once you have done this you will receive an email from wikispaces inviting you to join the eHealth Nurses Network Wiki Space - you do this by visiting the wiki site via the link in their email and either entering a password and accepting - or declining..

OK - but what does the Wiki Space offer me?
This is quite a new concept and needs a little time to get a full understanding of all the possibilities. The first and most obvious thing about a Wiki Space is that the space and the evolving content in it is owned and inputted by you - the Network Members themselves. It gives you the opportunity to discuss areas of interest or concern with other networkers much like you would do via an email chat group - but instead here its via the wiki.

What possible gain is that for me?
OK - if we just ran a Listerve/chat group - you'd have all the chat email about anything coming into your PC. With a wiki based Discussion Facility, you:

  • can choose to be notified if and when any discussion is entered related to your area/s of interest - you then visit when you have time. Nothing else will come into your email box.
  • can link with and discuss with nurses, midwives and others who share your interests and/or specialist area of practice

But there's much more than just on-line discussions possible!

What - for instance?
You can post and read relevant articles, web page links and/or documents yourself. This needs a little practice - but once you've cracked it - its easy! Again - this information is related to your interests - and you'll often find that it's also linked to on-going discussions and/or current news - or changes in the NHS. You can find out what others across the UK feel - and share your feelings and local reality with them - if necessary underpinned by your own documents or other information!

OK - but I already get a load of information and news easily pushed at me via the eHealth Nurses Web Site every month - why would I want to go to a Wiki Space as well?
Because on this main eHealth Nurses Network web site you

  1. Cannot input anything yourself
  2. Cannot carry on a discussion around the topics with anyone
  3. Cannot develop any discussion by relating it to local realities/work you have done
  4. And importantly, should you want to develop any area further you have no access to any sort of virtual 'sharing of the evolution of a document/idea' option whatsoever.

This web site is minimally interactive - the Wiki Space is maximally interactive

If it's such a good idea, why make it private and secure - by invitation only? I don't want to be 'invited'.
If it was an open site, anyone from anywhere could add to - or read - your inputs and discussions - some of this might not be ideal - and monitoring of the site would become a real security challenge. Also, much of what you want to discuss is best achieved with like minded practitioners - by allowing input only via a Contact Form the membership is known. If you have something you eolve on the wiki that you want to share world-wide on the web site - we can post this for you here on the main web site

How have you decided the set up and style of the wiki?
The initial launch style has been based on ensuring that the Wiki Space covers all the areas Network members have mentioned as areas of special interest on joining. If an area you are interested in is not there - it is because no-one has listed it yet on a Contact Form. This is interesting in itself - go to the Wiki Space and look at the areas listed - there's quite a coverage already! Nurses and midwives are pretty canny about the needs for eHealth in their practice!

If I want to do more than just take part in Discussions (very easy) - how can I get Help?
If you look at the bottom of the page on the wiki site you will see a Help button - there is wikispace help listed here. It is hoped that the Wiki discussions will underpin the need for face to face Network groups to meet - eHealth Nurses Network is keen to support and facilitate this element - and hopefully at these meets we can further explore use of the Wiki Space to its maximum.

For now please just complete a Contact Form, await your invite and JOIN IN! If you don't try, you'll never know!
